- If you unlock the aspect ratio, we stretch or squash the image to match your exact dimensions. This can distort subjects like people or landscapes, so we recommend keeping the ratio locked.
- Can I resize an image to be larger than the original?
- Yes, but upscaling stretches the existing pixels and can make your image look blurry. For sharp print results, always start with the largest possible original file.
- Can I batch-resize different files to different dimensions at once?
- Currently, we batch-resize all files in a session to the same dimensions. To use different sizes, process your first batch, click "Clear all," and then upload the next batch.
What is Image Resizing?
Resizing adjustments change the pixel dimensions (width and height) of your image. For instance, resizing a large 4000×3000 photo to a compact 800×600 makes it load much faster and takes up less storage space. You can easily specify exact pixel dimensions or lock the aspect ratio so that adjusting one side automatically scales the other. It's the go-to tool for fitting images into websites, social media, and online applications with strict size guidelines.

Why Keeping the Aspect Ratio is Crucial
Adjusting width and height independently stretches or squashes your image, making people and objects look distorted. To avoid this, always keep the aspect ratio locked. This way, you only need to change one side, and the other scales automatically. If you need to fit a specific ratio (like a square profile photo), crop the image first and then resize it. Entering random values for both width and height is the quickest way to end up with a warped picture.
Debunking the Myth: Enlarging Doesn't Make Images Clearer
Many people assume that stretching a small photo to a larger size makes it sharper, but the opposite is true. Resizing tools cannot generate new details that weren't captured in the original shot. When you enlarge a small image, the software simply stretches the existing pixels to fill the new space, resulting in a blurry, pixelated look. If you need a high-resolution image, it's always best to start with a high-quality original. While shrinking an image keeps it crisp, expanding it cannot bring back lost details.
Halve the Width and the File Drops by How Much? We Measured
Intuition says halving the width halves the file size. In practice it falls much further. We saved the same photograph at different width percentages, holding JPG quality at 80, and measured the actual bytes.

Halving the width halves the height too, so the pixel count drops to 25% — a quarter, not a half. The file fell further still, to 12%. Downscaling averages neighbouring pixels together, which erases fine noise and micro-detail, and that is precisely the information JPG finds hardest to store.
This is why reaching for the quality slider first is usually the wrong order. If the image is larger than it will ever be displayed, resize before you touch quality. Serving a 1600px original in an 800px slot and compensating with low quality gives you visible degradation without matching the savings a resize would have delivered.
Resize and compression are different controls. Resize decides how large the image appears; compression decides how many bytes it spends at that size. Resize to the display size first, then compress only if you still need to go lower.
