- What is AVIF, and why will it not open?
- It is a modern image format that fits the same quality into far less space than JPG, and the web is adopting it steadily. Most browsers display it, but image editors, document tools and upload forms frequently do not. The file is not broken — the receiving side simply cannot read it.
- Will the JPG be larger?
- Usually, yes, because AVIF compresses considerably better than JPG. The conversion trades efficiency for compatibility. If you can use the file on the web as-is, keeping the original AVIF is the better call.
- Conversion fails with a read error.
- Your browser does not support decoding AVIF — the conversion relies on the browser’s own image handling. Try a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or Safari 16.4 and later.
