FAQ
- If it is lossless, why does the size drop?
- Because BMP barely compresses and PNG compresses losslessly. No pixel information is discarded — runs of the same colour are simply recorded more compactly. The image is identical; only the file is smaller.
- When should I pick PNG over JPG?
- For images dense with text, tables or thin lines, for screenshots and drawings, and for masters you will keep editing. JPG leaves smearing along edges on that kind of image. If your goal is simply to lighten a photograph with a full background, JPG is far smaller.
- The size barely dropped.
- Lossless compression struggles with photographs, where colours vary intricately from pixel to pixel. If PNG gains you little and you can trade away some quality, consider the JPG conversion instead.
