- How do you handle transparent backgrounds?
- JPG doesn't support transparency (alpha channels). We fill transparent PNG pixels with your selected background color (white by default). Use our color picker or enter a HEX code to choose any color.
- What quality setting should I use?
- Settings between 80% and 92% keep images looking sharp while reducing file size. Dropping below 70% can introduce visible compression artifacts, which we only recommend for quick social media uploads.
- How much file space will I save?
- Photographs and natural images typically shrink by 60% to 85%. However, screenshots or simple graphics with flat colors often stay smaller as PNG. Compare your output sizes to choose the best format.
Check This Before You Convert
The most common accident when converting PNG to JPG has nothing to do with quality — it's the background. JPG has no concept of transparency, so any transparent area in your PNG will be filled with some colour, always. If you converted a cut-out logo with default settings and ended up with a white rectangle, that isn't a bug; it's the format's hard limit.
Pick the Fill Colour to Match Where the Image Will Live
Switching lets you choose the fill colour during conversion. The rule is simple: use the same colour as the background of wherever the image will end up. White for a white web page, the exact slide colour for a dark deck. Get it wrong and you'll have a coloured box framing your logo — visibly worse than the original. If you can't know the destination colour, that image probably shouldn't become a JPG at all.
Where Should the Quality Slider Sit? We Measured
Everyone knows lower quality means a smaller file. The real question is how far you can go. We encoded the same 1600×1067 (1.71MP) photograph at different quality settings and measured the actual bytes, using libvips 8.18.3.

The interesting step is 95 down to 80. That single move alone cuts 63% of the file size, and the difference is hard to spot on screen — which is exactly why quality 80 is a sensible default for most web images. Below 60 the savings taper off while the damage becomes obvious. Here is the same region at 3× magnification.

At quality 40 the fine texture is gone and the image clumps into visible squares. This damage is permanent — re-saving a low-quality file at high quality does not bring back what was discarded, so it's worth keeping the original PNG somewhere safe.
Images That Should Not Become JPG
- Logos and icons that need a transparent background — the transparency will be filled in.
- Screenshots full of text and tables — you get edge artefacts and almost no size benefit.
- Masters you plan to keep editing — damage accumulates with every save.
When JPG Is Clearly the Better Call
- Ordinary photographs with a full background — big size savings, no perceptible quality loss.
- Email and chat attachments — you stay under size limits and previews render instantly.
- Submissions to older systems that can't read PNG — JPG opens essentially everywhere.
