- Why will the image I saved from the web not open?
- Browsers display WebP happily, but older image editors, some word processors, and upload forms on government or job sites often still refuse it. The file is not broken — the receiving side simply cannot read it. Converting to JPG solves it.
- What happens to a WebP that had transparency?
- JPG has no concept of transparency, so those areas are always filled with some colour. White is the default; set it to match the background where the image will sit and it will blend in. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
- Does converting hurt quality?
- Both WebP and JPG are lossy, so you are recompressing an already-compressed image. At quality 0.92 the difference is hard to spot. Below about 0.7 you will start seeing smearing around edges.
