FAQ

Should I choose PNG or JPG?
Choose PNG to keep text and charts razor-sharp or to preserve transparency. JPG works better for standard photos and document scans to keep file sizes low. PNG files can grow large at higher render scales.
Can I preserve transparent backgrounds?
Yes. Enable "Keep transparent backgrounds" to preserve transparent areas from the PDF. Disable it to fill those areas with white. Since most PDFs have built-in white backgrounds, you might not notice a change.
How do I download multiple pages?
We generate one PNG per page. Download pages individually or bundle them all into a ZIP file. We include page numbers in the filenames.
Do you upload my files to any server?
Never. We render PDFs and convert images locally on your device. We clear everything from memory when you close the tab.
How do I output the highest quality?
Increase the render scale to 3x for maximum sharpness. Because PNG is a lossless format, higher scale levels increase file sizes quickly. Pick the setting that fits your needs.

For Documents, PNG Is Actually the Lighter Choice

"JPG is small, PNG is heavy" keeps people from exporting documents as PNG. For text documents that rule is simply backwards. We converted a one-page A4 text document to both formats at each render scale and measured the real file sizes.

PNG won at all three scales. At 4.17× the gap reaches 3.6× — 240 KB for JPG against 66 KB for PNG. The reason is how each format compresses. A document page has broad stretches of white and very few colours, which PNG reduces extremely efficiently. JPG meanwhile manufactures artefacts around every letter edge, then spends bytes storing them.

So for contracts, papers, and table-heavy reports, PNG gives you better quality and a smaller file at the same time. There is no trade-off to make.

When Sharpness Is the Priority

  • Embedding a document page like a screenshot in a blog post or slide deck

You Can Produce Transparency the PDF Never Had

There is one thing only PNG can do: carry an alpha channel — a transparent background. When a PDF page has no background of its own, converting to PNG can leave that area empty instead of painting it white.

The use case is specific and real: pulling a logo, a scanned stamp, or a signature out of a PDF so it can sit on top of something else. With a white background baked in, dropping it onto a dark slide leaves a white rectangle. With transparency it simply blends. JPG cannot do this at all.

Match the Scale to the Final Display Size

A PDF is coordinate-based and has no inherent resolution, so the render scale decides how many pixels the page is drawn with. Skimming on screen or building thumbnails: 1× (10 KB). Sharing a document someone may zoom into: 2× (26 KB). Printing or close inspection: around 4× (66 KB).

Doubling the scale grows width and height together, so the pixel count quadruples. Pushing it arbitrarily high can exceed what the browser can process in one pass and fail the conversion, so it's worth not going beyond the size you actually need.

When PNG Turns Into the Wrong Answer

Everything above applies to text-led documents. A photo book or an image-heavy brochure inverts the result completely. Photographs with smooth colour transitions are the hardest case for PNG to compress, and the same page ends up several times heavier than its JPG equivalent.

The test is easy: open the page and look. Mostly text and tables means PNG. Photographs filling the sheet means JPG.

Narrow Down the Pages

Converting dozens of pages at once makes the file count and total size climb fast. Specifying page numbers or a range up front saves the cleanup. If you don't know which page holds what, export everything at 1× to find it, then re-convert only the pages you need at a higher scale.
