FAQ
- What does PNG give me over JPG here?
- Two things: the transparent background survives, and colour edges do not smear. GIF is commonly used for icons, shapes and text — exactly the kind of image where JPG makes edges look dirty.
- What about the rest of the frames in an animated GIF?
- Only the first is saved, since PNG does not hold multiple frames either. If you need the motion, keep using the original GIF.
- The PNG came out bigger than the GIF.
- An animated GIF is large because it holds many frames, but frame for frame the PNG can still be bigger: GIF caps itself at 256 colours to stay small, while PNG has no such limit. When you only need one frame, that difference is usually worth accepting.
