TIFF Size Doesn't Depend on Content — You Can Predict It

JPG and PNG sizes swing wildly with image content. Uncompressed TIFF does not. We built three images with completely different characteristics at the same 1600×1067 dimensions, saved each in every format, and measured the actual bytes.

JPG and PNG vary by orders of magnitude across the three rows; the TIFF column is identical.

JPG ranges from 29 KB to 269 KB and PNG from 23 KB to 3,591 KB, yet all three TIFFs came out at exactly 5,002 KB. With no compression applied, every pixel occupies its 3 bytes of colour data regardless of what it depicts, so size is a pure function of pixel count. The arithmetic confirms it: 1600×1067×3 bytes = 5,121,600 bytes, and the only difference from the measured file was 262 bytes of tag header.

That makes the output size predictable before you convert — just multiply width × height × 3. A 24-megapixel phone photo, for instance, lands around 69 MB. This is why you check your storage and transfer limits first. TIFF is a poor fit for email attachments and web uploads, and a good fit for print delivery and long-term archival, where the size is worth paying.

Since TIFF files use either no compression or lossless compression, they can easily be dozens of times larger than their JPG counterparts. A 500 KB JPG can easily turn into a 30 MB TIFF. This isn't a bug—it’s how TIFF preserves every single pixel. Because of this, TIFFs are not suitable for emails, web uploads, or messaging apps. They are best reserved for print and archiving where storage space isn't an issue. For general web sharing, JPG or PNG remains the practical choice.

When to avoid using TIFF
