FAQ
- When is PNG the better choice over JPG?
- When you plan to edit and re-save the photo repeatedly, or you will cut out the background for compositing. PNG never degrades on re-save. If you are only sending or uploading the photo, JPG is far lighter and opens everywhere.
- Why is the result so much larger than the original?
- HEIC is remarkably efficient — roughly half the size of JPG at the same quality. PNG discards nothing, so growing several times over is normal. Check your available storage before moving hundreds of photos at once.
- Is anything lost in the conversion?
- The motion from Live Photos, portrait-mode depth data, and HDR information have nowhere to live in a PNG, so they are dropped. If you might need any of that later, keep the original HEIC files.
